This season, our theme is Community and Art. Considering this is a rattling election season here in the United States, I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to take a step back and take life a little more seriously by getting involved in community projects and working toward tangible personal goals.

We Need In-Person Community
My blog is not about politics. However, I live in a country where nearly everything can be politicized. The beer you drink, the food you eat, to the color of your skin and whether or not you like to workout (the list goes on) has been hijacked by political agendas. It has gotten to a point where it is exhausting because there is so little nuance.
I think we need more in-person communities. It is easy to get trapped in online echo-chambers, but meeting people outside of algorithms and social media can make us less angry, more proactive, and more inclined to understand the perspectives of our neighbors. In other words, more nuanced.
This year’s chaotic election cycle inspired me to get more involved in my community, whether it be action through local politics, support for local institutions and businesses, or volunteer work for the community. The goal is to be present to help and cooperate with others.

1. Participate in Local and National Politics, Elections, and Movements
Despite feeling like political officials don’t have our best interests in mind, we still need to be involved. Our votes alone during national elections are bare minimum obligations. Voting and volunteering on the local level during all elections can help us see immediate results and build connections with the same people that live in our communities. Presidents have power, but they do not oversee absolutely everything that goes on in our states (nor, should they).
2. Volunteering
Even though it is often difficult to balance much required work hours with volunteer hours, we should try to make a difference in these upcoming difficult times. I want to volunteer for a local pantry or soup kitchen this season. It has been on my mind to do so for awhile.
3. Create Art and Support Local Artists
What artistic creations can we build out of some paints, fabrics, and boredom? What local artists can we support and appreciate? I sometimes feel as though I don’t take advantage of my creativity. I’ve neglected years old paints, gouache, and watercolors, never feeling like I was any good. This time, I want to spend less time comparing myself to other artists, and more time learning from them, practicing, and treating art like dreadlocks: everybody’s is going to be different.
Romantic Fall Color Palette

This season’s color palette is inspired by a photograph I took of some scarlet firethorn. The beautiful plant has striking orange and red berries in the fall and winter, then blooms delicate white flowers late in spring.
DIY Project and Craft Ideas
Fall is a cozy knitting and sewing season. Create some glowing knit scarves, or upcycle fabrics to create kitchen gear.
