Vintage World War II Recipe

Back in September of 2023, I talked about one of my vintage finds: The Victory Binding of the American Woman’s Cook Book, Wartime Edition. This gem of a book was published in the early 1940s in order to provide households with culinary resources to help sustain families during World War II.

I reference this book a lot. You can tell I really love it!

I made some adjustments to the recipe. First off, the original recipe states that it makes 36 brownies. Unless you cut them into tiny squares, that will not happen. You will get more like 9 to 12 squares.

If you prefer butter to shortening, you absolutely can make the substitution. You can also substitute the pecans for walnuts, peanuts, or leave them out completely.

8″ Square Baking Pan

Vintage Recipe: Brownies

Prep Time 45 minutes
Servings 9 brownies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (50g) sifted cake flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp shortening
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp corn syrup
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 oz semi-sweet chocolate, melted
  • 1 tbsp hot water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (50g) pecans, chopped
  • powdered sugar, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder.

  3. In another large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add the honey and syrup and continue creaming.

  4. Beat in the eggs and mix well.

  5. Beat in the melted chocolate.

  6. Add the dry ingredients, hot water, and vanilla and mix well. Stir in the pecans.

  7. Line an 8 inch square pan with parchment paper and spray the inside with non-stick spray. Pour the batter into the pan.

  8. Bake the brownies for 20 minutes, or until the center is fully baked. Test this by sticking a toothpick into the center of the brownies. If it comes out clean, then it is ready.

  9. Allow the brownies to cool completely before dusting with powdered sugar and cutting them into squares.
