I Made Mermaid Tail Pull-A-Part Cupcakes

Honestly, pull-a-part cupcakes are not my favorite projects to do, but I did have a lot of fun making this shimmery mermaid tail. Other than unicorns, mermaids are also popular at the bakery, mesmerizing guests with layers of tropical colors. In general, I love variegating oceanic blues and teals, and then adding pops of neon and dark colors to make the pieces stand out.

Mermaid Tail Funfetti Cupcakes

This is a grouping of 24 funfetti cupcakes. Here is my favorite Funfetti Cupcake Recipe. You can also use Yellow Cake or Vanilla Cake.

To make this cake, I first covered the arranged cupcakes with a flat layer of white buttercream. Starting on the left hand side of the cake, I airbrushed a gradient that transitions from royal and Hawaiian blue to teal blue. The gradient is subtle in the photograph, but it’s still reminiscent of ocean waves. I airbrushed the icing violet and rose pink toward the end of the fin.

Completed Cake!

As always at the bakery, I had to work quickly, so I did not pipe the scales as neatly as I would have liked, but they still looked good against the airbrushed tail. I then I piped both solid and variegated rosettes and stars along the left side of the tail and the edges of the fins. I used an assortment of customized colors that I created using navy, rose pink, teal, neon purple, and violet. To finish the cake off, I sprayed pearl shimmer for that eye-catching metallic effect, and dusted the cake with edible glitter.

Overall, it was a wonderful success! I made a little girl very happy! I mentioned before that I have a weakness for ocean themed cakes. Next time I have an excuse to make a layered cake at home, will I’ll dabble with some seashell decorations.
