The Little Mermaid Inspired Treats

Growing up, I only saw a handful of Disney Princess movies, instead preferring the animal animations such as 101 Dalmatians, The Aristocats, and The Fox and the Hound.

But if I had to choose from the pool of princess movies from before 1995, I watched Cinderella and The Little Mermaid the most.

To be honest, I am not a fan of the live action Disney movies. The colorful and exaggerated art of 2D animation does not always translate well into live action. With that said, I think the live action rendition of The Little Mermaid, although not perfect, is the best out of the live action films.

Despite the movie’s slow beginning, it truly picks up in the middle with beautiful covers of the original songs, and a much better fleshed out Eric. I thought Halle Bailey truly embodied the spirit of Ariel, even sounding just like her in her voice.

I watched it unexpectedly with one of my friends, and it got me in the mood to share and reflect on all of the mermaid treats I have made over the years. If you require a Little Mermaid themed dessert, check out these mermaid themed designs.

Neon Seashell Cupcakes

Neon Seashell Cupcakes

During the pandemic, I created these neon seashell cupcakes for a customer, and worried at first that the combination of neutral and bright colors would imbalance the overall look of the cupcakes.

However, the colors balanced out. The sandy color of the shell cupcake ring reminds me of beach sand among swirling waves. Meanwhile, the coral colored starfish reminds me of Ariel’s red hair.

To get the swirled effect, variegate teal, pink, and purple buttercream in a piping bag and pipe swirls using an Ateco 852 Tip or Wilton 2D Tip.

Finish the decoration with a generous sprinkle of white edible glitter.

Mermaid Tail Pull-A-Part Cupcakes

Mermaid Tail Pull-A-Part Cupcakes

This mermaid’s tail pull-a-part cupcake design is one of my most popular posts.

I used Funfetti Cupcakes for the cake base, and a sugar and butter based buttercream. I am proud of the airbrush work and piping along the edges. And, of course, I doused the cupcakes with pearl shimmer and glittery sprinkles at the end.

This cupcake design reminds me a little of Halle Bailey’s gorgeous mermaid tail with its iridescent scales that shift from teal to purple to pink.

Dolphin Sheet Cake

Dolphin Sheet Cake

There is a scene in The Little Mermaid where Prince Eric’s crew mistakes a pod of dolphins for mermaids. I adore dolphins, so I sighed a little bit of relief when none of them were killed.

This dolphin sheet cake was created in roughly twenty minutes during a busy day. I was both proud and relieved.

Fondant Mermaid Tails and Seashells

Fondant Shells

Mermaid tails and seashells are easy to make with a good silicone mold. If making a Little Mermaid cake or mermaid themed dessert, these tails and seashells are a must.

If I don’t have time to make marshmallow fondant, I use Satin Ice.

Teal and Blue Mermaid Cake

White chocolate raspberry mermaid cake

This mermaid cake was a treat for me. This is a white chocolate raspberry cake that has been elegantly decorated to look like ocean waves.

If white chocolate raspberry is not your forte, you can use another cake flavor such as white or yellow.

Enchanting Mermaid Cake

Two tier mermaid cake

This cake was originally designed for my baby cousin’s birthday. The colors remind me of Ariel’s beautiful tail and fins. Like her skin, the cake is flecked with shimmer and glitter.

I enjoyed baking and decorating this cake since I don’t always have the opportunity to make mermaid decorations.
