Way back when I was a full time baking newbie, I was obsessed with the Great British Bake-Off, and it was there that I found out about Self -Rising Flour. This is not always an easy ingredient to find in the US. I had to check several grocery stores before I found it in an obscure isle at a neighborhood store. What is this fantastic flour?

Self-rising flour is a type of flour that already contains leavening agents, typically baking powder and salt. This makes it convenient for recipes that require these ingredients, such as biscuits, pancakes, and quick breads. It turned out to be a game changer when cooking and baking because the texture and crumb of my cakes, muffins, and biscuits greatly improved. Muffins retained their moisture, pancakes were never raw and stayed fluffy. and biscuits were soft on the inside yet perfectly textured on the outside.

How to make self-rising flour at home

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (100g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp (7g) baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp (2g) salt

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, add the all-purpose flour.
  • Add the baking powder and salt to the flour.
  • Use a whisk or fork to thoroughly mix the ingredients together until evenly distributed.
  • Once well combined, your homemade self-rising flour is ready to use in your favorite recipes.

Side Note: Make sure to use the self-rising flour in recipes that call for it specifically, as the leavening agents may affect the rise and texture of the final baked goods. Additionally, store any unused flour in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for future use.

If you require more than the recipe suggests, double or triple your batches and keep flour in a glass storage jar or flour bag.
