Dark Maple Apple Sauce

Warm, lightly spiced, and rich with color and maple flavor, this applesauce has a deeper flavor than its store-bought counterpart. It is delicious on its own or as an addition to a plated salad or roast pork. Perfect as a dessert substitute if you’re trying to control your cravings and portions. Make it vegan by doubling the amount of maple syrup and leaving out the honey!

Dark Maple Apple Sauce

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 Crips Pink apples Honey Crisp, Kukui apples, or any other type
  • 1 cup (200ml) water
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp ground allspice
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/3 cup 75g maple syrup or 2/3 cup (150g) for vegan applesauce.
  • 1/3 cup 75g honey leave out for vegan version
  • grated nutmeg to taste

Instructions

  1. Core and remove the seeds of the apples and cut them into chunks or slices small enough to fit into a blender, food processor, or bullet.
  2. In batches (or if processor is large enough), blend the apples with the water until smooth. Pour the mixture into a Dutch oven or pot and add the ground spices.
  3. Bring the sauce to a simmer and keep covered, cooking for 30 minutes. Let the applesauce cool for 10 minutes.
  4. Stir in maple syrup and/or honey and grated nutmeg.
  5. Serve warm or chilled.
